The Portland Art Museum’s exhibition Abstraction Since Mark Rothko presents the enduring vitality and evolution of American abstract painting from the post-war era to the present day. Organized as a companion to The Art of Mark Rothko—the landmark inaugural presentation celebrating the museum’s monumental Mark Rothko Pavilion expansion—the exhibition draws from the permanent collection to examine how successive generations of artists built upon, reinterpreted, and challenged color field abstraction and emotive mark-making.
