Janie C. Lee Gallery was a premier Texas contemporary art venue founded in Dallas in 1967 and later expanded to Houston in 1974. Directed by visionary dealer Janie C. Lee—who went on to become Curator of Drawings at the Whitney Museum of American Art and a champion of the Menil Drawing Institute—the gallery played a crucial role in bringing the New York vanguard and minimalist movements to the American Southwest. Throughout the 1970s, the gallery represented a pivotal bridge for post-war abstraction and works on paper, mounting major exhibitions by titans like Jasper Johns and Helen Frankenthaler alongside groundbreaking shows by Frank Stella—such as his 1975 survey Variations on the Square 1960–1974.
